Lesson 01 · Beginner

Make AI remember you.

Right now, every new chat starts from zero. Your AI doesn’t know your job, what you’re working on, or how you like answers — so you get answers written for “anyone.” Five minutes fixes that for good.

Works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Grok. Free plans included.

Step 1

Let the AI write it for you

Most people freeze at the empty box. So don’t write it yourself — have the AI interview you and write it for you. Copy this and paste it into whichever AI you use most:

I want to set up my AI so it knows me. Interview me to write my custom instructions. Ask me one short question at a time, 6 questions at most, about what I do day to day, what I most want help with, how much I know about AI, and how I like answers (short or detailed, casual or formal). When you're done, write two short sections I can copy: "About me" and "How I want you to answer." Keep the whole thing under 1,000 characters, in plain first-person sentences.

Answer its questions honestly — short answers are fine. At the end it hands you two tidy paragraphs. Those are your instructions.

Step 2

Paste it into your settings

Every big AI app has one box that it reads before every chat. Here’s where it lives:

ChatGPTSettings → Personalization → Custom instructions
ClaudeSettings → Instructions for Claude
GeminiSettings → Personal context → Your instructions for Gemini
CopilotSettings and more (…) → Chat settings → Personalization → Custom instructions
GrokSettings → Customize → Custom instructions

Menu looks different? These apps move things around. Open your settings and search for the word instructions — that finds it in all five.

Step 3

Test it, so you can see the difference

Open a brand-new chat and ask something you asked last week. You should notice it skipping the generic warm-up and getting to the part that actually applies to you.

If the answers feel too formal, too long, or not quite right, go back to the box and change a line. This isn’t permanent — you can edit it any time, and the next chat picks up the change.

One more thing

Memory is the other half

Most of these apps also have a Memory setting, usually in the same area. Instructions are what you tell it on purpose. Memory is what it picks up from your chats over time. You can open it, read what it saved, and delete anything you don’t want kept — worth a look either way, just so you know what’s there.
